Handmade In Small Batches
De Mairo Genuine Lapis Lazuli Ultramarine Watercolor is a professional-grade gemstone paint handcrafted in Canada using 100% genuine Afghan lapis lazuli sourced from the historic Sar-e-Sang mines of Badakhshan. This is true ultramarine — refined from natural stone, not a synthetic substitute.
For centuries, lapis lazuli ultramarine was the most precious pigment in the world, valued higher than gold and reserved for sacred manuscripts, royal commissions, and Renaissance masterpieces. De Mairo revives this tradition with complete authenticity while meeting modern ethical standards.
Each 15 ml tube is made in small batches using a refined, plant-based binder system. Our formula is 100% vegan and cruelty-free, free from ox gall, bone black, casein, fillers, or synthetic additives. The result is a watercolor with exceptional depth, luminosity, and permanence — allowing the crystalline beauty of the gemstone to shine.
This Series 8 professional watercolor offers high pigment concentration, smooth flow, and excellent lightfastness. It is designed for artists who seek historical authenticity, rarity, and uncompromising quality in their materials.
Experience genuine Ultramarine Blue — crafted from the gemstone of kings, cathedrals, and centuries of art history.

Can I Mix Lapis Lazuli Watercolor With Other Colors?
Yes, lapis lazuli watercolor can be mixed with other colors to create a wide range of effects.
Because natural ultramarine made from lapis lazuli is transparent and slightly warm in tone, it blends well with many pigments while retaining clarity.
When mixed with reds, lapis lazuli produces clean violets and purples. Combined with earth pigments, it creates muted, natural blues and shadow tones. When mixed carefully with yellows, it can form soft greens, although excessive yellow may reduce brilliance.
Due to its mineral structure, lapis lazuli watercolor is best mixed gently and in limited combinations. Many artists prefer layering rather than heavy mixing to preserve its depth and luminosity.
Common mixing effects:
- With reds → violets and purples
- With earth tones → natural shadows
- With yellows → muted greens
- With whites → lighter atmospheric blues
No harmful synthetic additives
