Gum Arabic for Watercolor & Gouache
A ready-to-use gum arabic solution created for artists who make watercolor and gouache from dry pigments. Smooth-flowing and easy to work with, De Mairo Gum Arabic is especially suited to natural mineral and gemstone pigments.
One binder. More control over your colour.
Smooth, Beautiful Flow
Helps pigments move smoothly during paint making and gives artists greater control over the working consistency of their colour.
Made for Pigment
Gum arabic is the traditional water-soluble binder used to combine dry pigment into watercolor and gouache paint.
Luminosity & Transparency
Gum arabic can increase transparency and surface brilliance while allowing the individual character of the pigment to remain visible.
Created with mineral pigments in mind.
Natural minerals behave differently from conventional manufactured pigments. Gemstone pigments can be dense and highly individual in particle structure, requiring careful control of the binder while being transformed into paint.
De Mairo Gum Arabic Solution is an excellent choice for working with heavier mineral colours and is particularly suited to artists making paints from lapis lazuli, malachite, jasper and other natural pigments.
Make watercolor or gouache from dry pigment.
Every pigment absorbs binder differently, so there is no single pigment-to-binder ratio that works for every colour. Begin with a small amount and adjust gradually until the desired consistency is reached.
Prepare the pigment
Place a small quantity of dry pigment on a clean glass slab or suitable paint-making surface.
Add gum arabic gradually
Introduce the solution a little at a time and combine it thoroughly with the pigment.
Mull & adjust
Work the paint with a glass muller or palette knife and adjust the binder until your preferred flow and consistency are achieved.
A studio essential for traditional paint making.
About Gum Arabic for paint making
Answers to common questions about using gum arabic with watercolor, gouache and natural pigments.
What is gum arabic used for in watercolor?
Gum arabic is the traditional water-soluble binder used in watercolor paint. It binds pigment into a usable paint and can influence flow, transparency, gloss and working consistency.
Can I use this gum arabic solution to make my own watercolor paint?
Yes. De Mairo Gum Arabic Solution is designed for combining with dry artist pigments to create handmade watercolor paint. Add the solution gradually because different pigments require different amounts of binder.
Can gum arabic be used to make gouache?
Yes. Gum arabic can be used as the binder when making gouache from dry pigment. The final opacity and handling will depend on the pigment and the overall paint formulation.
Is it suitable for lapis lazuli and other mineral pigments?
Yes. This solution is especially well suited to heavier natural mineral and gemstone pigments, including lapis lazuli, malachite and jasper colours.
How much gum arabic should I add to pigment?
There is no universal ratio. Pigments differ in density, particle structure and binder demand. Start with a small quantity of gum arabic solution and add more gradually while mixing or mulling until the desired consistency is reached.
Can I add gum arabic to finished watercolor paint?
Yes. A small amount can be mixed with watercolor to modify its handling, increase transparency and alter the flow and surface appearance. Test with a small amount first.
Is De Mairo Gum Arabic vegan?
Yes. De Mairo Gum Arabic Solution is vegan and intended for artists making and modifying water-based paints.
Is this gum arabic intended for food use?
No. This product is sold as an artist material and is intended for paint making and art use only.
