Five primary genuine gemstone pigments, 30 grams each, hand-milled in our studio from real semi-precious stone, never dyed, never imitated. From these 5, you can mix an entire palette, so there's no colour you need to buy that you can't make yourself.
No grinding required. The pigments are already very fine, so a slight mull or mix with your chosen medium is all it takes, then they're ready to use. Make your own oil paint, gouache or watercolour, or mull them for egg tempera and fresco. Because the pigment is real stone, the colour stays luminous and exceptionally lightfast for generations, with no fillers, chalk or synthetic brighteners.
The five primary pigments:
- Fra Angelico Blue — the rich, luminous blue of genuine lapis lazuli
- Malachite — a cool, vivid green
- Canyon Red — a warm, earthen jasper red
- Yellow Gold — a soft golden ochre from yellow jasper
- Green Jasper — an earthy olive green
Suggested mediums: walnut oil brings out the lapis lazuli and keeps its blue true, while poppy or linseed oil suits the malachite and jaspers. For watercolour or gouache, any gum arabic works, ideally one suited to heavier mineral pigments.

How to bind them
Choose your medium.
The pigment is ready — you decide what to bind it with. A light mull is all it takes; no grinding required.
Oil paint
Walnut, poppy or linseed
Walnut oil brings out the Fra Angelico lapis beautifully and keeps its blue true. Poppy or linseed oil suit the malachite and the jaspers.
Watercolour & gouache
Gum arabic
Any gum arabic medium works. For these heavier mineral pigments, a gum arabic suited to minerals gives the smoothest, most even mull.
Tempera & fresco
Egg yolk or lime
Mull with egg yolk for tempera, or with lime for fresco — the pure pigment adapts to any traditional medium.

What's in the set?+

Do I need to grind them?+
No. The pigments are already milled fine, so no grinding is needed — a slight mull or mix with your chosen medium is enough, and they're ready to use.
Can five pigments really make every colour?+
Yes — they're primaries. Blend them for charcoals, greys, violets, oranges, browns and countless shades in between. For a charcoal blue, for example, temper the lapis with a little red and green.
Which medium should I use?+
For oil, walnut oil is best for the lapis lazuli, and poppy or linseed oil suit the malachite and jaspers. For watercolour or gouache, any gum arabic works — ideally one suited to heavier mineral pigments. You can also mull them with egg yolk for tempera or lime for fresco.
Are they genuine and lightfast?+

How should I handle the powder?+
As with all fine art pigments, work in a calm space and avoid inhaling the dry powder — mull gently and keep the jars sealed when not in use. Once bound into a medium, the colour is settled and easy to work with.
