Some famous artists who used lapis lazuli pigment in their art

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519)

The renowned Italian artist used lapis lazuli in some of his paintings, including the iconic "Annunciation.

Vermeer (1632–1675)

Johannes Vermeer, the Dutch painter famous for his use of light and color, is thought to have used lapis lazuli in some of his paintings, such as "Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441)

The Flemish painter, known for his meticulous attention to detail, is believed to have used lapis lazuli in some of his works. In van Dyck’s Charity from 1627-8, its most obvious use is in the blue cape, where Ultramarine Blue Lapis Lazuli was painted over Indigo, applied as both a tint and a glaze over the top.

Michelangelo (1475–1564)

When Michelangelo painted the sistine chapel, he demanded to use Lapis Lazuli for its pigment vividness. Lapis Lazuli Azzurro is a formidably example of heavenly craftsmanship. The Sistine Chapel is by far is one of the most exquisite uses of lapis pigment for the blues of heaven where the best stones were required.
