Six genuine gemstones, ground and mulled by hand into a single palette. This gouache set brings together six colours from our Demairo Colour Palette collection: three grades of Afghan lapis lazuli, genuine malachite, and two shades of jasper, each one 15ml and part of our Series 8 formulation.
Every colour begins as raw mineral. There are no synthetic dyes, no fillers, and no shortcuts, just stone, ground to a fine pigment and bound with our in-house gum arabic, made vegan and free of animal-derived ingredients. The result is gouache with a depth and luminosity that manufactured pigments cannot match, and colour that stays true on the page for centuries, the way it has on manuscripts for a thousand years.
This set was built with illuminators in mind. Tezhib work, manuscript illumination, and miniature painting all call for pigments with real body and light-reflecting character, and genuine gemstone gouache has been the material of choice for this kind of work since long before synthetic paint existed. Whether you're working on gold ground, laying in fine detail, or building up layered washes, these six colours give you a complete and historically grounded palette.

What is gemstone gouache?+
Gemstone gouache is an opaque, water-based paint made by grinding genuine semi-precious stones — lapis lazuli, malachite and jasper — into fine pigment and binding it in gum arabic. Palette di Pietra is made this way, by hand, in our own studio.
Are the paints non-toxic?+
Yes. Every colour in the set is genuine and non-toxic. The pigment is natural ground gemstone and the only binder is gum arabic.
Is the gouache opaque or transparent?+
It is naturally opaque, with strong covering power. Because it is bound only in gum arabic, you stay in control — add water or a little extra gum arabic to thin it into a luminous, translucent wash.
How lightfast is it?+
Excellent. Genuine gemstone pigments are exceptionally lightfast and resist fading, which is why works painted centuries ago with these same minerals still glow today.
Will the paint feel gritty?+
No. The pigment is real ground stone, but it is milled fine and bound carefully so it lays down smooth — never gritty and never muddy.
Will these colours come in other forms?+
Yes. The same six gemstone colours will follow in watercolour and oil paint, and will also be offered as loose pigment in jars.
